GENERAL INFORMATION:

The general theme of the V SPCAL Congress is “LAS for all: Laboratories, Animals and Scientists”, aiming to be an event as comprehensive as possible, for those involved in the use of animals for scientific purposes, including researchers who carry out research with animal models and vivarium professionals (directors, managers, veterinarians, technicians, and caretakers).

 

Date: January 25th and 26th 2024.

Congress language: The official language of the Congress is English.

The Department of Civil Engineering is located at Pólo II of the University of Coimbra, which is located on the right bank of the Mondego river. Polo II houses part of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra, namely the departments of Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

From Lisbon - there are frequent train and bus connections in a journey that takes approximately 120 minutes.

From Porto - there are frequent train and bus connections in a journey that takes approximately 60 minutes.

For the Department of Civil Engineering - Polo II:

Within the city of Coimbra, the Coimbra Urban Transport network (SMTUC) has three bus lines that serve Polo II:

Line 34 – University – Pole II of the University, with regular departures during the day (between 7 am and 8 pm).

Line 38 – Planalto S. Clara (Forum) – Campus II of the University, with regular flights during the day (between 7 am and 8 pm).

Line 24T – Palácio da Justiça – Quinta da Nora, with a lower frequency (at the end of the day and on weekends and holidays).

PROGRAM:

The program includes speakers of recognized national and international merit, on topics of high collective interest, including in the areas of education and training; continuing professional development; implementation of the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine) and alternative methodologies; new technologies and innovative models; communication with society, compassion fatigue among others. Among the several invited Speakers, we have already confirmed the presence of Miguel Castelo-Branco, a renowned Scientist in the field of neurosciences and bioimaging; Chris van Ginneken, the Vice-president of the FELASA Education and Training Board accrediting LAS courses and promoting harmonization on education and training in the field; Kirk Leech, from EARA, presenting the developments of the European Citizens’ Initiative “Save Cruelty Free Cosmetics - Commit to a Europe without animal testing” and related actions taken by the scientists community and European Commission; Helena Paradell from Zoetis, discussing the role and challenges of Laboratory Animals Veterinarians and strategies for dealing with compassion fatigue, experienced by many of those involved in research with animals and care of those animals; Joaquim Tapisso presenting the challenges of research with wild animals and temporary laboratory accommodation and welfare; and many others.

Oral Presentations vs Poster:

The congress will have sessions for the presentation of scientific and/or technical works, both in the form of oral communications and posters. Depending on the number of Abstracts received, the Scientific Committee of the Congress will select the works to be presented as oral communication or as poster. There will be dedicated sessions to pitch presentations of posters (max. 3 minutes/3 slides ) – “Flash Talks”. All poster presenters are invited to participate in the session where the best poster/pitch will be elected by the audience.

When submitting your abstract, you must indicate whether you have a preference for any type of presentation format (oral communication or poster).

ABSTRACTS SUBMISSION and AWARDS:

 

Abstracts format:

The Abstract must be submitted in the Congress pre-registration form and written according to the following guidelines:

In a maximum of 500 words , include the following information:

Mandatory information : Title, First and last authors’ names, Authors affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, References.

Optional information : Authors ORCID ID, Acknowledgments.

 

All abstracts accepted by the scientific committee for presentation (oral comunication or poster) at the congress will be published in the journal Laboratory Animals limited , UK journal ( https://lal.org.uk/ and https://journals.sagepub.com/home/lan )

Abstract to scholarships closed in November 30, 2023.

 

SPCAL Awards:

Both the best oral comunication (elected by the Scientific commiittee) and the best poster/pitch (elected by audience votes during the Flash Talks session) will be awarded a value of 150€ in money each.

All types of registrations include access to all congress sessions, lunches and coffee-breaks in the 2 days. No type of registration includes the congress social dinner, which will have a single cost of €30 per person.

SPCAL registration scholarships:

The Board of SPCAL decided to provide 4 (four) scholarships support the participation of 2 students and 2 professionals, SPCAL members, studying or working in the field of Laboratory Animals Sciences, at the V SPCAL Congress, to be held in Coimbra, from January 25th to 26th, 2024.

Whenever there are less than 2 candidates eligible as students or as technicians, the 4 scholarships will be filled with elements from the other group of candidates.

The value of each scholarship to be awarded corresponds to the registration fee for the congress.
